Good joiners are worth their weight in gold. Though some of the bigger companies are good for larger projects, where they can deal with the quantity and timescales, we generally prefer to work with smaller companies. The reasons for this are twofold. The costs of most joinery items these days can go through the roof whereas when working with a smaller company their overheads are lower and they are generally more open for negotiation. This can work the other way when they need to buy in special components that the bigger companies have more purchasing power with. Most importantly in our view is that the smaller companies tend to take greater pride in each project and commit more time and therefore the quality is of a high standard too. We are blessed to know a few good smaller joinery companies who we trust and enjoy working with. We obviously also have contacts with some of the larger companies too, but like to get at least two or three of them to price for the same project as their quotes can varying greatly and one that is cheaper for one project may not be for the next. |
